Traditionally,eachUNIXvendorhasprovidedtheir
ownAPIforprocessingdigitalaudio.Thismeant
thatapplicationswrittentoaparticularUNIX
audioAPIhadtobere-writtenorported,with
possiblelossoffunctionality,toanotherversion
ofUNIX.ApplicationswrittentotheOSSAPI,need
tobedesignedonceandthensimplyre-compiledon
anysupportedUNIXarchitecture.OSSissourcecode
compatibleacrossalltheplatforms.

MostUNIXworkstations,thusfar,haveonly
providedsupportfordigitalaudiosamplingand
playback(businessaudio).OSSbringstheworldof
MIDIandelectronicmusictotheworkstation
environment.Withtheadventofstreamingaudio,
speechrecognition/generation,computertelephony,
Javaandothermultimediatechnologies,
applicationsonUNIXcannowprovidethesameaudio
capabilitiesasthosefoundonWindowsNT,OS/2,
Windows95andtheMacintoshoperatingsystems.OSS
alsoprovidessynchronizedaudiocapabilities
requiredfordesktopvideoandanimationplayback.
